As a boy growing up during the Cold War, I remember the  class room “duck and cover” drills and a certain amount of fear of the nuclear threat and the Cuban Missile Crisis.   What I most remember about the missile sites in eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa, was my dad getting up early in the morning and driving out to do electrical work at the sites near Mead, Nebraska and Treynor Iowa. Recently i toured the former missile base near Arlington with online- editor Leeanna  Ellis for an Enterprise and Citizen news story.  The property is up for sale for a little over $2 million dollars.  The base was operational by the spring of 1961.  Three launch buildings housed Atlas D missiles – each with a nuclear warhead aimed at separate targets in the Soviet Union.
No missiles were ever fired, and the base was decommissioned in 1964.
