I recently photographed Tom Wood for the Enterprise Retirement Lifestyles section. Wood has volunteered as a re-enactor since the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976.
In addition to his Living History portrayal of Col. Henry Leavenworth, Wood also puts on his “tar bucket” hat and hand made circa 1820’s officer’s uniform and travels across Iowa and Nebraska to attend services for soldiers killed in combat. He told reporter Tricia Barber that this is a way for him to pay back the tribute and respect that he received in July 2010, when his 19 year-old son, Eddie, was killed in Afghanistan He is a representative for Iowa’s “Remembering our Fallen” program which honors those soldiers who died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Tricia Barber’s complete interview with Tom Wood is in the April 2014 Enterprise Retirement Lifestyles section
The Fort Atkinson Living History events for this season begin this coming weekend, May 3-4.
