Enterprise Publishing earns awards at NE Press Convention

Omaha Triathlon

My co-workers at the Enterprise Publishing Company brought home a load of awards and honors at last week’s Nebraska Press Association Convention in Lincoln. In addition to the sixty-four awards from the Better Newspaper Contest, the Washington County Pilot-Tribune received the World Herald Service to Agriculture and Community Service awards in its circulation category.

I was also pleased to learn that I received the “Sports Photo of the Year” for my photo of USA Triathlon cyclists as they passed through southern Washington County last summer. I also received first, second and third place news photo awards in Class D – which is the class for weekly newspapers in our circulation category.

The majority of the 60 plus honors were  awarded to “staff ” – the talented team effort by writers, photographers, editors and visual artists.  Well done!

Blair Balloonist Jaworski inducted into Hall of Fame

Jaworski Hot Air Balloon
Over hill and dale. Rich Jaworski pilots his passengers above the hills north of Blair in March, 2016.

We all look up to Blair balloonist Rich Jaworski when we see his brilliant red and white striped balloon float through the skies over Washington County on a calm morning or evening. Following his induction into the Nebraska Aviation Hall of Fame Enterprise on-line editor and reporter  Leeana Elis interviewed Jaworski, and I searched through my archive for photos I have taken over the years to accompany the article.

I have watched Jaworski and his crew prepare for take off many times, but the most memorable for me was standing in the parking lot of St.Francis Borgia  in the wee hours of a frigid morning in 2007 as the balloonist prepared for a long distance flight.

Congratulations to Rich, and thanks for the joy you provide as we view your balloon floating over the countryside. – Joe Burns

I am reading Michael Forsberg’s beautiful book, On Ancient Wings which I received as a Christmas gift from my daughter and anticipating another visit to  the Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary in March.  These are a few of my favorite sandhill crane images from last March.

DeSoto favorites

The weather was bitter cold one year ago in January 2015 when I photographed these swans on a patch of open water on lake DeSoto.  These are my favorite DeSoto NWR photos from last year.

Happy New Year and thank you

Bailey and Gage Hartline
Bailey and Gage Hartline, Fort Calhoun High School Commencement 2014.

I enjoyed reading Casey Logan’s article and viewing Greg Higgins’ photos in the OWH Living section this morning.  Higgins’ project that began on Jan 1, 2014 was to photograph daybreak each morning for an entire year.  While Higgins’ failed to complete the entire year, it was a magnificent failure.  Higgin’s photos can be seen at gthfoto.wordpress.com and gthfoto.photoshelter.com

I can identify with his obsession.  Over the past year or so, I have been sharing my images of what I see and experience as I make pictures for the Washington County Enterprise newspapers. Thanks to all who have viewed my images at washingtoncountyjournal.com and for your kind comments.

I am also grateful to the  Washington County Enterprise  Publishing Company for continuing to pay me for what I love to do, and to managing editor Katie Rohman and the editorial staff for continuing to run my photos.

And thank you to the teachers, coaches, administrators, city and county law enforcement, fire and rescue personell and city and county residents who have accepted me, and allowed me to make images.

I look forward to the year to come.
